Keller Fence Requirements
In Keller, every new fence and any replacement of 8 linear feet or more needs a city permit, and replacement permits are free. S&B Fencing pulls the permit for you; you provide the property site plan. Wood fences facing a street must have the finished side out.
We check Keller's requirements for your property at your free on-site visit.
Permits and Paperwork8 requirements
- Replacing 60% or more of a legal non-conforming fence requires meeting current standards.
- For SF-20, SF-25, SF-30 and SF-36 lots of at least a half-acre, open fencing along front or side property lines may be up to 6 feet. Check the rear-yard height limit with the City of Keller.
- Drive gates swing in toward the property and sit at least 25 feet from the curb on residential streets and 50 feet on thoroughfares.
- Open-style fences adjacent to a street must be at least 4 feet inside the property line, except where the front line borders a bar ditch.
- On corner lots, wood follows the platted building setback; open fencing may sit back to 8 feet from the property line. A visibility triangle is required.
- Pool barriers are at least 4 feet, with self-closing, self-latching gates and openings no more than 4 inches.
- We pull the permit whenever Keller requires one.
- You provide the property site plan.
Height and Placement1 requirement
- Fences next to subdivision screening walls may not be taller than the wall.
Materials and Finished Side4 requirements
- The finished-side requirement also applies next to alleys, schools, parks and public spaces. Posts and hardware face inside.
- Thoroughfare fences use cedar, metal posts, cedar top and bottom caps, and Ready Seal or equivalent stain, with pickets outside the posts.
- Next to parks, trails, open space, common areas or drainage easements, use wrought iron, tubular steel or similar. No wood directly behind required open fencing.
- Barbed wire, electric, slick wire and pipe fencing are limited to farming or ranching on undeveloped property over 2 acres.
HOA Approval
Your right to fence
HOAs Can't Ban Perimeter Fences
Texas Property Code §202.023 stops an HOA from banning a perimeter fence used for security. The HOA can still regulate the fence type.
Read the lawFront yards · SB 711
New Limits Since September 1, 2025
HOA covenants can prohibit fences in front of the house's front building line and fences that block sidewalks or drainage, and can require driveway gates set back 10 feet. Fences built before that date can stay and be maintained.

The HOA Has to Explain a Denial
For HOAs with more than 40 lots, §209.00505 requires a denial to give the reasons and the changes needed. You can ask for a board hearing within 30 days. The law sets no decision deadline. That comes from your HOA's own requirements.
